This is an exciting role funded by two NIHR research programmes: the Diet & Obesity Theme at the NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre and NewDAWN, an NIHR programme grant for applied health sciences.

The Diet and Obesity Theme at the NIHR Oxford BRC aims to develop and test clinical interventions for weight loss as the primary treatment for obesity-related disease. This is a programme of work that spans the range from early phase work on systematic reviews, complex intervention development and feasibility testing, to larger scale trials. The focus of the work is to trial interventions that could be used in routine NHS practice.

NewDAWN (New remission care pathway: Diabetes Adaptive Weight management Network) is an NIHR programme grant in which a new care pathway for people with overweight and newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes will be tested. The aim is to increases the likelihood of achieving remission compared with the current best NHS treatment.

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic researcher to initially work across number of projects, before focusing on NewDAWN. You will primarily be involved in setting up and running trials of weight loss interventions. The post will involve developing the approvals for the trial, recruiting patients and managing the trial, conducting study visits, and contributing to data analysis. Progressively, the post will involve developing the protocols for the NewDAWN feasibility trial and managing its delivery. Throughout the appointment, there will be opportunities to contribute to projects across the research team including systematic reviews and secondary data analyses.

You will be embedded in the thriving Health Behaviours Team, co-led by Professor Susan Jebb and Professor Paul Aveyard. The team works on interventions to prevent or treat ill-health by intervening on diet, obesity, and smoking. We have a strong track record of applied research that can benefit patients and lead to changes in the health system. We are committed to involving members of the public in all stages of our work and the postholder will receive training and support to do so. We also offer generic training opportunities for researchers seeking a career in applied health sciences. We engage with a wide range of stakeholders and policymakers to facilitate the translation of research into practice.
