Applications are invited for a Research Technician to provide technical support to Dr Rob Pitceathly and his team, working under the supervision of Dr Pitceathly and Dr Micol Falabella in the lab, which is part of several world class initiatives, including the MRC funded Cardiolipin metabolism in mitochondrial DNA replication and division project, the Genome Editing Mice for Medicine call (MRC Harwell), and 5-year MRC International Centre for Neuromuscular diseases.
These are projects focused on understanding the impact of mitochondrial genes variants on lipid metabolism and the clinical phenotype.
The Technician will be responsible for culturing a range of cell models, DNA and RNA extraction from human cells and tissues (e.g., blood and skeletal muscle) and performing basic molecular biology experiments (e.g., cloning and PCR). The appointee will also be trained on and be responsible for initial data review of samples, processing, and analysis. The post will additionally involve working on publications with Dr Pitceathly and the team. Training will be given with all techniques.
The successful candidate should have a degree (minimum 2:2) in Biological Sciences, or a related discipline, or an MSc or other degree in a relevant subject. A background in molecular biology or cell culture techniques, experience of working with samples such as Human tissues DNA and RNA, excellent time management, and the ability to work to strict objectives are essential. Good inter-personal skills with an aptitude to work co-operatively in a multidisciplinary setting, and excellent oral and written communication skills are also required. Experience of technical excellence, experimental reproducibility and culturing fibroblasts / tissue culture techniques is desirable.
The post is available from December 2021 and is funded by the UCLH Research and Development Directorate for 24 months in the first instance. Starting salary on UCL Grade 6 in the range £29,802 - £34,867 per annum including London Allowance.
