About the role

The University of Leicester is seeking to appoint a Teaching Fellow in Sociology in its School of Media, Communication and Sociology.

Sociology has been taught at the University of Leicester since 1948, with the University establishing one of the first Sociology Departments in the UK in 1952. Since then, Leicester Sociology played a central role in the history of the subject in the UK and internationally. Some of the most eminent names in the discipline – Norbert Elias, Anthony Giddens, Andy Furlong, John Goldthorpe, Mary McIntosh, and Laurie Taylor amongst many others – were formerly students and staff at Leicester. The School of Media, Communication and Sociology continues these outstanding legacies by offering well established undergraduate and postgraduate degrees that focus upon bringing academic subjects to life. Central to this is an increasing emphasis in our undergraduate sociology provision of offering students a creative, practice oriented, employer relevant and intellectually rigorous approach to sociology. Our aim is for our students to ‘do sociology’ rather than just to read about it.

The main priority of the role is teaching, marking supervising and supporting students through their studies by providing feedback and personal tutoring. This role will suit someone with experience in teaching Sociology in a higher education context.

About you

As the ideal candidate, you will either have, or be working towards a teaching qualification (e.g. Associate Member of the HEA). You will have experience of teaching a range of sociology modules in a higher education institution and have the proven ability to develop and deliver undergraduate sociology teaching in a variety of formats including via blended learning. Proven competency in module design, sociological pedagogy, and the delivery of high-quality teaching and the ability to communicate complex information clearly, and to encourage commitment to learn in others is essential.

The University of Leicester prides itself on the diversity of its student population and on being an inclusive employer. We encourage applications from candidates who represent the diversity of our student population, local communities and wider society. In particular, we welcome applications from female candidates and from Black, Asian and minority ethnic candidates, as this is a staff group currently underrepresented in the University.

Additional information

Please contact Dr Ian Somerville (MCS-HoS@leicester.ac.uk) Head of School for Media, Communication and Sociology for any informal enquiries about this role.

As part of the University’s ongoing commitment to professional development, this role will also be considered on a seconded basis for existing staff members. Please ensure this is discussed with your line manager prior to applying. More information regarding secondments can be found here.

The University of Leicester has been changing the world, and changing people’s lives, for 100 years. When you join us, you’ll become part of a community of Citizens of Change, which includes not only our staff and our current students but also thousands of Leicester graduates around the world.
