Student Services is responsible for providing information, advice, guidance and counselling. The professionally trained staff provide support to the student community on career management, placements, disability, student funding, welfare concerns, student visas, mental health and counselling, as well as providing general student information and advice on University-related issues via the Support Enquiry Zone (SEZ). Abertay Sport also form part of the service in relation to physical activity and health.

The University now seeks to appoint a Student Advisor

Reporting to the Advisory Service Manager, you will 

  • Provide high quality professional, non-judgemental and impartial, advice and guidance that is up-to-date and unbiased on a broad range of issues that is empathetic, effective, and engaging relating to a range of student experience issues including academic progression, student welfare, international student support, student funding, and disability (including specific learning difficulties).
  • Work proactively with students, support and academic staff to increase student retention and success.
  • Promote student engagement in wellbeing activities through the provision of online resources and a planned programme of workshops, initiatives and activities.

The role requires;

  • Previous experience of working with a wide range of people delivering information and advice in Higher Education, Further Education or Advice Agency.
  • Knowledge and experience of higher education and academic structures
  • Experience of working within a regulatory framework
  • Empathy and understanding of the needs and concerns of University students
  • Experience of working as part of a team and of establishing, enhancing and maintaining short and long term relationships with internal and external contacts
  • Knowledge and understanding of confidentiality and GDPR
  • Experience of effectively undertaking complex administrative processes and use of IT systems (including MS Office and financial computer systems) to maintain records, to assimilate, analyse and present data and to support service delivery
