This is an exciting opportunity to join a team, led by Prof. Mairéad MacSweeney, on a Wellcome funded project aiming to determine the ‘Mechanisms of reading development in deaf children’. The post-holder will be expected to lead a project which will conduct longitudinal studies to identify the role of visual language inputs in reading in deaf and hearing children. The research team consists of: (Prof. Charles Hulme; Dr. Fiona Kyle; Prof. Arne Lervåg; Dr. Lizzie Buchanan-Worster). An advisory team, made up of deaf and hearing educational practitioners will also be involved in the design and running of the project.
The post-holder will be responsible for the design and running of the study, and associated experiments, data collection, data analysis and writing up results for publication. The post-holder will be based at the UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience and will also be a part of the UCL Deafness, Cognition and Language Research Centre (DCAL).
You will have a PhD in psychology, or a very closely related discipline. Experimental psychology training, including experimental design and data analysis and knowledge of BSL or another sign language (equivalent to level 2 or above) are essential. You will be able to demonstrate a proven ability to analyse experimental research data independently and the ability to write up results for journal publication. Experience of conducting research with deaf adults or children is desirable.
