Applications are invited for a Post Doctoral Research Fellow position in the UCL Division of Infection and Immunity in a research team led by Professor Greg Towers. The post is funded by an MRC project grant entitled “Characterisation and therapeutic manipulation of Flaviviridae innate immune evasion”. The work encompasses all aspects of the molecular biology of nucleic acid sensing and its evasion by flaviviruses with particular focus on Dengue Virus and Hepatitis C virus. A key goal is to develop inhibitors of innate immune evasion beginning with modified cyclosporines with potent antiviral activity.

We also aim to understand the mechanisms of viral sensing in primary human cells and the consequent cell biology of the antiviral response that is unleashed after sensors are triggered. Specific projects are designed taking into account the interests and experience of the post holder with a view to taking the most tractable approaches to making the most exciting discoveries. The post-holder will be expected to perform the highest quality research under the direction of the Principal Investigator, and to work effectively with group members and external collaborators.

Professor Towers directs an interdisciplinary team, including molecular virologists, biochemists, immunologists and structural biologists. Key research goals are to gain a greater understanding of virus-host interactions and to develop new ways to inhibit virus by disturbing evasion of intracellular innate immunity.

The position will suit a motivated postdoctoral scientist who wishes to develop their career and pursue opportunities for independent fellowships.

See https://www.ucl.ac.uk/towers-lab for further background information.

The postholder should have a PhD (or about to be awarded) in a relevant subject. The successful candidate must have significant experience of working in a research laboratory. Evidence of scientific contribution including publications and presentation at conferences is also essential. Candidates must have excellent oral and written scientific communications skills, commitment to collaboration in research and to taking a multidisciplinary approach to problem solving. Applicants with experience working with Dengue Virus and Dengue Virus replicons are particularly encouraged to apply.

Please note: appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B (salary £32,217 - £33,958 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.

Applicants should apply online. To access further details about the position and how to apply please click on the ‘Apply’ button above.
