Are you interested in ensuring that world-class research helps inform public policy in the United Kingdom and beyond? The Universities Policy Engagement Network (www.upen.ac.uk ) is committed to making this interchange of knowledge, data and ideas happen and is looking for a new Network Manager.

We are looking for someone who already understands the higher education landscape and who has experience of engaging with policy-makers and research users. Over two-thirds of all higher education institutions in the UK are members of UPEN and the role of the network manager is to work with the Chair and the Executive Committee to deliver existing projects while also shaping the broader strategic agenda. Ideally with experience of maintaining a network of contacts and with forging partnerships across traditional organisational and professional boundaries, this is an exciting and lively role that demands a solution-focused approach to challenges, an entrepreneurial mind and a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

Educated to at least degree level, the UPEN manager will need to have excellent time management skills, commitment to creativity and highly self-motivated. In return this post offers a stimulating challenge, the possibility of travel and the opportunity to undertake further professional training or qualifications.

The University of Sheffield is a top-100 global university with departments and research institutes undertaking cutting-edge research across the scientific spectrum. It is also a proudly civic university with a commitment to supporting policy-making at all levels. The movement of UPEN from the University of Nottingham to the University of Sheffield reflects this commitment and provides an opportunity to promote and facilitate policy engagement across the UK.

The Network Manager works with the UPEN Membership and Communications Officer to provide the dynamic central capacity for UPEN. A significant part of the role involves liaising with institutional members and external stakeholders (such as the Government Office for Science, Cabinet Office, Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology, UKRI, etc.). An excellent blend of administrative and ambassadorial skills will therefore be required alongside a solution-focused approach to work and a good sense of humour. We will ensure that the successful individual is fully supported in gaining new skills and expertise, and that mentoring and career advice is available throughout the project.

This is a very rare opportunity to work at the intersection of research and policy.

We are committed to exploring flexible working opportunities which benefit the individual and University.

Enquires about the position should be directed to Professor Matt Flinders m.flinders@sheffield.ac.uk or on 07773 144 155.

We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
