Postdoctoral Research Associate in Applied Mathematics - Fixed term (Full-time or Part-time)

University of Liverpool

Location: Liverpool
Salary: £35,327 to £40,928 per annum
Hours: Full Time, Part Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 12th January 2022
Closes: 8th February 2022
Job Ref: 036706

We are seeking a post-doctoral researcher to work on an inter-disciplinary project funded by the NC3Rs on “Defining drug delivery into and across the oral mucosa using a tissue engineering and mathematical modelling approach”. Most drugs are delivered either orally in tablet form or by injection. However, these routes have a number of drawbacks, which has led to the search for different modes of treatment. Drug delivery into or through the highly permeable oral mucosa offers pain-free, self-administration of drugs and is therefore an attractive alternative. The increased interest in mucoadhesive drug delivery systems in recent years has led to an increase in animal experiments to test different drug formulations or drug delivery devices. Optimising oral mucosal-mediated drug delivery is extremely important. This study aims to develop and use mathematical models parameterised by data from both human tissue and *in vitro* tissue engineered oral mucosal drug delivery experiments to predict the optimal drug delivery outcomes for a variety of drugs, expediating their transition to clinical use whilst decreasing the numbers of animals used for these studies.

The mathematical modelling is led by Professor Rachel Bearon and will involve close collaboration with biological experimentalists at the University of Sheffield (Prof Craig Murdoch - project PI & Dr Helen Colley).

You must display clear evidence of outstanding promise and originality in research and have a promising record of scientific research publications. You must also have a clear interest and ability in cross-disciplinary research. Experience of developing novel mathematical models based on biological data would be valuable.

You should have a PhD in a relevant subject such as applied mathematics and have good experience of computer programming in a language such as Matlab or C++. The successful candidate will be expected to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary research team, have the ability to develop and apply new concepts, and have a creative approach to problem-solving. They will also be expected to demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be able to write clearly and succinctly for publication. The post is available on a fixed term basis, until 31 December 2023. Full-time or Part-time working will be considered (minimum of 0.5 FTE, including Job Share).

The University has the right to close the vacancy early if it is deemed that there have been enough applications received
