Job Summary

An exciting opportunity to establish a convergent science approach to research challenges with a molecular dimension. Suits a collaborative individual with a strong scientific/technical background, ideally with some experience of science communication and research strategy. Individuals with postdoctoral experience are particularly encouraged to apply.

Within a supportive team, you will deliver IMSE’s goal of stimulating and promoting trans-disciplinary, collaborative research on global challenges, enabling translation to end-users in the field of molecular science and engineering. Working with the Institute’s academic leadership to facilitate collaborative activities with stakeholders, and support the generation of grant proposals with external partners. You will be responsible for delivering the Institute’s Briefing Paper series and other translation activities, e.g. blog and podcast.

This role requires a high level of engagement with the research community across all faculties and departments, and with external partners and stakeholders. Strategic thinking, teamwork, and a proactive approach are required to initiate and develop internal and external relationships, build communities, identify and respond to opportunities, and deliver pivotal initiatives.

Duties and responsibilities

You will plan, manage and deliver the thought-leadership and translation activities of the Institute. You will produce our Briefing Paper series, and disseminate the Institute’s work through news articles, blogs and podcasts. 

Your other responsibility will be planning and delivering activities to develop the Institute’s research strategy and grant proposals, in collaboration with our partners. 

Essential requirements

  • A good undergraduate level or Master’s degree, (or equivalent) in a science or engineering subject.
  • A PhD in an engineering or molecular science subject area, or equivalent level of professional qualifications and experience.
  • Technical/scientific understanding (physical or biomedical science, and/or engineering).
  • Scientific/technical communication at a high level, with experience of communicating scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Exposure to working with academics or in an academic environment, and of collaborating across disciplines.
  • Experience of managing multiple parallel, complex projects.
  • High level of scientific literacy – understand and synthesise advanced scientific literature.
  • Excellent communicator – highly developed written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to explain complex ideas and produce effective communications for a broad variety of audiences.
  • Highly collaborative – work flexibly and efficiently with colleagues, researchers, and external partners, maintaining upward and lateral communication.
  • Strong motivator – effective interpersonal and influencing skills; able to empower others to produce a high standard of work.
  • Attention to detail with excellent analytical skills.
  • Resourceful and flexible - adept at problem solving and independent decision making.
  • Time management and organisation – able to run multiple work streams simultaneously and prioritise work with minimal direction to achieve objectives.
  • Keen curiosity about science/engineering/technology and interest in promoting research and education in these areas.
