The Department of Materials wishes to appoint a Research Associate to work on projects aimed at synthesizing nanoprobes with multi-functionality, based on gold nanoparticles, for NIR II fluorescence bioimaging. This post is based within the Functional materials group at Imperial College London, working with Dr Fang Xie and involve collaborations with Department of Cancer and Surgery at Imperial College.

The Research Associate will design, synthesis and characterize plasmonic nanoparticles for applications in biosensing and bioimaging. The Research Associate will perform wet synthetic protocols to biofunctionalise nanoparticles to direct cell response or enable new biomaterials. You will be expected to work in a multidisciplinary environment and be active in multiple projects within our labs and through collaborations. You will be offered extensive opportunities for collaborative work, both within and external to Imperial College. 

You will be a conscientious, innovative experimental scientist who has successfully completed a PhD (or equivalent) in chemistry, biochemistry, physics, materials science or similar. Experience in nanoparticle synthesis and characterisation for applications in biosensing/bioimaing are essential. 

Key Responsibilities

• To take initiative in the planning and execution of research into synthesis characterisation of engineered nanomaterials (SEM, TEM, XRD, PL, UV-vis)

• To conduct data analysis and ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times

• To maintain accurate and complete records of all findings

• To write reports for submission to research sponsors and industrial collaborators

• To prepare material for presentation in oral and poster formats

• To present findings to colleagues and at conferences

• To draft and submit publications to refereed journals

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £36,694- £39,888 per annum.
