The British Museum is seeking a Project Curator: Africa to join the Africa Oceania and the America department. The main purpose of this role is to provide curatorial support to the Africa Section in the Department of Africa, Oceania and the Americas. Key tasks will include providing logistical and curatorial support for upcoming temporary exhibitions and liaising with external colleagues and stakeholders. The role will also involve some core collections and curatorial work, including upgrading documentation, and carrying out new research as directed and making this accessible via the Museum’s database.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • To support the planning and delivery of temporary Africa-focused exhibitions, including two upcoming Room 3 exhibitions
  • To support the curatorial team in the planning of Africa gallery refreshments
  • To provide assistance with collections visits and collections research requests
  • To support the International Training Programme 2023 and any participants from Africa
  • To support up-grading the documentation of key areas of the Africa collection
  • To respond to public and scholarly enquires relating to the Africa collections
  • To have a good understanding of museums and relevant best practice, and share this with colleagues
  • To attend meetings and engage in working groups relating to the Africa collections as required
  • To assist in the organization and delivery of events, conferences, seminars and work placements for Africa
  • To act as an advocate for the Museum
  • To work as a team member with colleagues within and beyond the department, and do some departmental administrative work
  • To change the focus of work as needed in line with museum priorities
  • Other duties as assigned

Person Specification:

  • Education: BA/BSc (or equivalent) in Anthropology, History or related subject.
  • Specific technical/professional skills & experience: knowledge of Africa material culture and history; working knowledge of museum database and image systems; IT literate.
  • Work experience: experience of working in a museum environment.
  • Specific managerial skills: assessing priorities and meeting deadlines; organisational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Specific interpersonal skills: open, effective communicator with good spoken and written skills; ability to work as part of a team and independently; highly organised and self-motivated.
  • Publications record: some prior experience of peer-reviewed publication.
