Director of Music

University of Cambridge - Magdalene College

Location: Cambridge
Salary: £22,553 (£37,588 pro rata)
Hours: Part Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 13th May 2022
Closes: 3rd June 2022

Magdalene College is seeking to appoint a Director of Music to facilitate and enhance the general musical life of the College, both internally and externally, and to sustain and further develop music in Chapel. The intention is to recruit an enthusiastic professional musician, who is an experienced choral director and, ideally, also an organist, who will be a resource for the whole College community, and will inspire musical performance and endeavour at all levels within the College, thereby making a substantial contribution to a vital and creative aspect of College life.

The Director of Music will develop and sustain a programme of student-led music, both within College and externally, promoting and encouraging all aspects of student musical activity in College, and liaising with the Alumni and Development Office in musical matters. The Director of Music will also sustain and further develop excellence in Chapel music, working with the organ scholars and choir to provide a high standard of music for regular choral services in Chapel, and for occasional services.

If suitably qualified, and for separate remuneration, the Director of Music may be offered the opportunity to participate in College teaching for the Music Tripos. Such participation or appointment would be considered separately from appointment to the post of Director of Music.

The post is envisaged as 60% time averaged over a year. The stipend for the part-time post will be £22,553 (£37,588 pro rata), depending upon experience and qualifications. The Director of College Music will be elected to a Fellow-Commonership, with dining privileges on High Table.

Applications, which should be submitted online at the following link https://app.casc.cam.ac.uk/fas_live/mdmusic.aspx, should include completion of the online form, a curriculum vitae, a covering letter, and the names and addresses of two referees who are willing to write to the College on the applicant’s behalf. Candidates should request references through the CASC online application system. Candidates are responsible for ensuring that references are submitted by the closing date, and are asked to draw referees’ attention to the notes for referees. Enquiries about the process of application may be addressed to the HR Department at hr@magd.cam.ac.uk.

The closing date for applications is 9am Friday 3rd June 2022. Interviews will be held on Wednesday 15 June 2022. Candidates selected for interview will be asked to conduct an audition rehearsal with the Choir and may be asked to perform a short piece of music on the organ.
