We are recruiting two permanent posts within the Plant-Soil Interactions Group at UKCEH Lancaster. These technical roles will contribute to a range of net zero focussed projects, regarding the mitigation and removal of agricultural greenhouse gases (GHG’s) from UK and international land use.

The work ranges from field surveys to more mechanistic experiments in the field and laboratory. Staff development for these roles will be through the 2-year UKCEH Research Associate training programme. This offers the opportunity for additional training and skill development related to the role. The training runs in parallel with the delivery of work.

Main Responsibilities

  • Contributing to field and laboratory biogeochemistry for a range of experiments, to address questions about climate, land use change and terrestrial biogeochemical cycles
  • Operation of GHG/Carbon flux measurements (e.g. GHG chambers, eddy covariance) and assessments of microbial community dynamics (e.g. enzyme assays, stable isotopic tracers)

Over the 2 years training you will gain or improve skills in some of the following:

  • Operation of automated chamber systems for measuring GHG fluxes from land use and climate change experiments
  • Analysis of large high-frequency datasets from GHG chambers, eddy covariance and sensors
  • Training in laboratory approaches for understanding biogeochemical cycles including microbial carbon and nitrogen dynamics
  • Remote First Aid and 4x4 training
