Reporting to Nicole Stremlau, the post holder will be a member of a research group in the Centre for Socio Legal Studies with responsibility for carrying out research for the European Research Council- funded project ConflictNet.

The post-holder will be expected to work across the ConflictNet project, contributing to, and supporting ongoing workpackages, including research on online hate speech and mis/disinformation in the global south, and anticipatory humanitarian action, particularly related to conflict. The researcher will also contribute to a workpackage that examines how social media and new technologies are affecting migration, both within Africa and between Africa and Europe. There is a focus on the intersection between technology and migrants, with an emphasis on how disputes are resolved that occur before, during, and after the journey. These disputes may involve conflict with smugglers, interlocutors, among others, and our focus is on the role of public authorities (including businessmen, clan elders, religious leaders, etc), and the use of technology and technology companies, in resolving such disputes.

The successful candidate should hold a PhD, or be near completion, in the social sciences (including socio-legal studies, African studies, law, anthropology, politics); research experience in Africa; a publication record; experience with contributing ideas for new research projects particularly related to the themes of the ConflictNet project; excellent communication skills; including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, represent the research network at meetings and sufficient specialist knowledge in socio-legal studies, migration, governance or ICTs to work within established research programmes and networks. 

The post is full time and fixed term until 31 July 2023

The postholder will be based in the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, Manor Road Building, Manor Road, Oxford, OX1 3UQ
