This post-holder will be based in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at Northumbria University to work on a new and exciting methodological research project funded by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), Health and Social Care Delivery Research (HS&DR). This research seeks to answer the following questions:

  1. What are the theoretical, methodological and practical similarities and differences between realist and economic evaluations?
  2. What lessons can we learn from using realist economic evaluation methods in practice to improve it?
  3. How can we use empirical and expert knowledge to produce consensus realist economic evaluation methods guidance?

The post holder will work as part of a multidisciplinary, cross institutional, international team, developing realist economic evaluation methods (REEM). This will include developing guidance to better understand and evaluate the benefits and costs of complex interventions. It will bring together realist and economic evaluation to enable evaluators to establish what works, for who, in which circumstances, why, and with what related resource impacts and opportunity costs. This is a three year fixed term research project will be conducted in three phases, moving from epistemological and ontological considerations, through to applied evaluation across a spectrum of health and social care interventions. Practically, this will be involve conducting: literature reviews; synthesis of diverse evidence; pilot evaluations including both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis; guidance development and testing; Delphi studies and consensus development conference.

We are therefore looking for an enthusiastic, independent, organised Research Fellow, with a passion for methodological development and experience of working as part of international team. The post holder is not required to have extensive experience of both realist and economic evaluation, but at least one is desirable.
