The British Museum is seeking a Scholarly Communications and Systems Librarian to work as a part of a team responsible for managing the Museum library collections and facilitating access for staff and external users. The postholder will be responsible for library systems including the development of the library management system, access to e-platforms and resources, and research repositories for publications and data. The Scholarly Communications Librarian will lead Open Access and Data Management compliance, providing training and support for Museum departments.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Support and develop the library management system (currently Koha) to deliver integrated library services and act as first point of contact for scholarly communication enquiries
  • Liaise with Information Services and appropriate external suppliers to support the technical development of the library management system and scholarly repositories to improve usability, systems integration, and service delivery
  • Ensure compliance with data protection and licensing conditions within library management systems and scholarly repositories
  • Develop and apply appropriate metadata standards to maintain the quality, consistency and discoverability of records
  • Communicate, consult and liaise with stakeholders across the Museum to identify, scope and deliver projects related to collection development, the Koha library management system, reader services, facilities and communications.
  • Maintain knowledge of funder requirements and developments within the scholarly communication landscape to develop appropriate processes for Open Access and data management compliance
  • Create and lead user education, training and outreach activities for scholarly communication including open access, copyright, author rights and data management with relevant department colleagues and the HR training team
  • Engage with British Museum and external stakeholders as well as regulatory groups to advocate, develop and report compliance with Open Access and Data Management regulation.
  • Develop metrics and prepare clear reports that analyse usage data, compliance and the effects of the library management system and scholarly communication tools
  • Facilitate access to the library and library resources for staff and the public including service point delivery
  • Catalogue library material in a library management system (currently Koha) using multiple classifications systems
  • Undertake any other relevant tasks as required.

Person Specification:

The successful candidate will be educated to degree level, preferably in librarianship or any subject followed by an accredited postgraduate qualification in information management. Candidates with work-based training and a CILIP qualification will also be considered.

We are looking for candidates with experience working in a large specialist library or heritage research collection, including support of a library management system or similar, cataloguing to RDA/AACR2 and MARC standards and implementing and supporting open access and data management services in either a university or research environment.

You will have excellent oral and written communication skills, along with good time management skills and the ability to work autonomously. A commitment to team working is crucial, and experience of line-management is desirable but not essential.
