The position is available for an immediate start with a fixed funding end date of 29 February 2024, 1.0 FTE. There is a possibility of extension subject to future project grant awards.
The Department of Physics is looking to appoint a technician to provide support to the Experimental Particle Physics (EPP) Group. The primary focus of the post is to contribute to the construction of a semi-conductor based tracking detector for the ATLAS experiment. This work is hosted by the University of Birmingham and so you will be predominantly based in Birmingham.
In addition, you will provide general technical support for the EPP Group across a wide range of research activities, under the close supervision of a senior technician. You will ideally be familiar with many of the standard techniques and processes within a Physics department, including handling of cryogenic liquids, chemical handling, pressure systems, vacuum systems, electronics, lasers, component design and/or use of machine tools. You will have excellent hand-eye coordination skills and capable of working to fine tolerances.
You will also be responsible for routine checks on equipment and systems and for regular maintenance and housekeeping in these areas. You will already have a broad level of basic technical competence. Further training in the use of all instrumentation and techniques will be provided.
You will have a HNC/HND or equivalent in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience.
You will have experience of working in a similar role within a research environment and will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and be able to work independently and as part of a team. You will have the ability to communicate and work with all manner of team members in a conscientious and inclusive way. You should also have excellent organisation skills and be able to plan your own workload.
In all aspects of the role, you will be required to work closely and proactively with academics, researchers, PhD students and technical staff.
You will ideally have a full driving licence (as a technical role, this position's duties may require the post holder to drive University or hired vehicles).
