Hours: Part Time

The History subject area at the University of Glasgow invites applications for two fixed-term Lecturer roles in Medieval History on the Learning, Teaching and Scholarship track.

One role provides cover for a colleague for 18 months from 1st January 2023 to 30 June 2024 at 0.8FTE (vacancy reference 088990). The second role provides cover for a colleague for five years from 1st September 2022 to 30st August 2027 at 0.5FTE (vacancy reference 093308).

Applicants must hold a PhD degree and have experience of research-led teaching in Medieval History demonstrating excellent pastoral and communication skills and engagement with pedagogical methods. Expertise in later Medieval History (1300-1500) would be desirable for at least one of these roles. For both roles, a capacity to contribute to teaching in areas of thematic strength outlined below would be advantageous.

The postholders will provide undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in their area of research expertise and contribute to team teaching on HIST1020 Europe Rising: The Medieval World, 500-1500 (year 1 undergraduate core course) and HIST5155 The World of the Crusades: Critical Approaches to Medieval Sources (MSc in Medieval History core course). Specifications for these courses can be found at www.gla.ac.uk/coursecatalogue.

These roles also include undergraduate and postgraduate dissertation supervision, second marking and moderation. If the postholders do not already hold a pedagogical qualification, they will have the opportunity to undertake the university’s Developing as a Teacher course.

History at Glasgow is a large and dynamic subject area with over forty historians ranging from early medieval to late modern. Areas of thematic focus include gender history, war studies, slavery studies, Scottish history and global history. Recent REF results demonstrate the excellence of our research and our commitment to public engagement, while our NSS scores indicate the strength of our student-centred, research-led teaching culture. History is part of the School of Humanities in the College of Arts at the University of Glasgow.
