This newly created post will play a key role in the newly-formed Westlakes Integrated Research Cluster in Sustainable Places and Communities (located within the trans-disciplinary Institute of Citizenship, Society and Change). As part of a team of experienced researchers, the Senior Research Assistant will contribute to strengthening the research area of Sustainable Places and Communities, whilst further developing their own research skills and experience. Specifically, they will work closely with the Reader in Sustainable Places and Communities and support the complementary work of three Research Fellows, each of whom are part of a dedicated research centre (Centre for Citizenship and Community; Healthy and Sustainable Settings Unit; In Certain Places) with their respective work focused on the inter-connected themes of Governance for Integrated Health and Wellbeing, Social Inclusion and Community Engagement and Place Development and Promotion.

The Senior Research Assistant will undertake qualitative and quantitative research with real-world impact; contribute to dissemination reports and publications; and facilitate project-planning and operational update meetings. With a good honours degree (2:1 or above) or equivalent and a masters degree or higher post-graduate qualification in an area related to Sustainable Places & Communities, the successful candidate will have experience of working in a field related to Sustainable Places and Communities; demonstrate skills and experience in research and knowledge exchange; be self-motivated, collegiate and highly competent in the use of appropriate IT software; and possess excellent communication / interpersonal skills.

This post will be based at the University’s Westlakes Campus in Whitehaven (Cumberland), but - in accordance with the University’s hybrid working model, some home-working may be possible. The post is funded by Westlakes Research Ltd. and will therefore contribute directly to its charitable objects to achieve public benefit.

Two thirds of the University’s research overall is rated as internationally excellent (4*) or world-leading (3*). Research from the School within which the post will be based was returned in two Units of Assessment: UOA3 Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy, where 79% of our submission overall was rated as  4* or 3*, and 71% of our impact was rated as 4* or 3*; and UOA20 Social Work and Social Policy (to which research from the Healthy & Sustainable Settings Unit was returned) – with a research environment assessed as 75% 4* (ranking us 8th in the discipline), 83% of our submission overall rated as  4* or 3*, and 100% of our impact rated as 4* or 3*.
