JOB OVERVIEW

Aberdeen International Study Centre (ISC) is based directly within the University of Aberdeen campus. You would be working in a culture of enhancing learning, teaching, and assessment through a developmental approach, which for you will mean autonomy, innovation, and development opportunities.

The centre is looking to recruit an experienced and passionate STEM subject leader to join the management team. You will lead a team of Academic Tutors to contribute to ensuring the best possible student outcomes and student experience.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Line Management and Personal Development

  • Provide effective performance management of direct reports, including setting personal objectives and KPIs; regularly reviewing performance of direct reports; and conducting formal performance reviews according to company policy and procedures.
  • Support the Head of Curriculum and Progression in recruiting new academic staff for subject area as required and according to Study Group policies and procedures.

Academic and Operational Management

  • Design and oversee the delivery of teaching and assessment for an agreed set of modules in subject area ensure Academic Tutors teaching the modules are fully informed of the curriculum content, teaching schedules, assessment modes and deadlines; and ensuring the best possible student outcomes and student experience.
  • Produce a set of agreed documentation for each course and module including course outlines, module handbooks, schemes of work and teaching material, with support and input from Academic Tutors. Review documentation regularly for accuracy and appropriateness.
  • Teach modules (up to 15 hours per week, with an average of between 8-12 hours per week) in agreement with the Head of Curriculum & Progression.
  • Mark assessments and record and report on teaching and assessment activity, including ensuring data is submitted accurately and within deadlines.

Academic Standards, Quality Assurance and Enhancement

  • Ensure that the design and delivery of all courses in subject area are conducted with reference to and according to Study Group’s, University of Aberdeen’s and relevant external agencies’ quality frameworks, policies, procedures, and codes of practice.
  • Plan, lead and participate in standardisation, moderation, and verification meetings.
  • Support Head of Curriculum & progression in liaising with External Examiners for STEM module areas, providing information to External Examiner as required.
  • Analyse, respond to and plan and implement actions as a result of External Examiner feedback and recommendations.
  • Support the Head of Curriculum & Progression in working with colleagues to monitor and observe teaching and learning activity and supporting Academic Tutors with continuous improvement of teaching and learning practices.
  • Ensure high levels of automatic progression are achieved for students across all agreed modules in subject area.

Partnership Liaison

  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with key academic contacts at the University for subject area, ensuring a full understanding of relevant University curriculum content, assessment modes and quality policies and procedures.

EXPERIENCE

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a STEM subject (Essential)
  • Masters in a related discipline (Desirable)
  • Experience of teaching international students in UK higher or further education (Essential)
  • Experience of planning and running complex education courses in subject area (Essential)
  • Line management experience in a teaching and learning environment (Essential)
  • Knowledge of best practice in teaching and learning in FE and HE in subject area.
  • Knowledge of relevant standards and benchmarks applicable to academic programmes and courses in HE.
  • Ability to analyse data and identify areas for improvement from the data.
  • Student-centred approach to planning and delivering educational services.
