Applications are invited for a motivated and experienced Chief Animal Technician to be part of a hard working team in a busy University Biomedical Service facility situated in south Cambridge.

As a member of a hard working team you will support the Biosciences Manager and Deputy BIofacility Managers with the daily operation of the barrier with a particular focus on providing technical support to researchers and technicians within the facility; undertaking regulated and non-regulated procedures as well as daily husbandry and animal welfare tasks. This will include the use of IVC technology, and maintenance of all necessary records.

The role holder will also support the Biosciences Manager and Deputy Biofacility Managers in the daily coordination and supervision of technicians including daily supervision and oversight of the team carrying out daily care routines, training and assessment of new and existing staff, and supporting staff reviews. You will have experience working in a designated with laboratory animals and using IVC's and you should have a Home Office Personal Licence (Modules A ¿ C) with up to date experience carrying out procedural work including regulated procedures. You will have good communication skills, able to work both independently and as part of a team, with experience supervising staff, Responsible for maintenance of and enforcing standards appropriate to procedural and surgical equipment, general supplies, cleanliness and tidiness of procedure and surgical rooms. Offer non-sterile assistance for surgical techniques undertaken in the Bio facility. Deliver training and advice on best practice for maintaining asepsis during all surgeries. Carry out pre and post-operative care involving the use of anaesthetic/analgesic techniques. Undertaking Home Office licensed procedures required for research on protected animals (including administration and collection of substances, Schedule 1 euthanasia and dissection of tissues/organs) and assisting with procedures and surgery as necessary including assisting the NVS with a variety of tasks. Training new staff and users in licensed techniques.

You will have IAT Level 2 or equivalent (as a minimum), and be able to demonstrate in depth experience of relevant legislation, guidelines and animal technician work practices. You must be able to use a computerised data management system.

The facility operates a rota system to provide animal care and essential husbandry at weekends and over Bank Holidays.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment and a security check.
