Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate (Biostatistics) in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology within the School of Clinical Medicine.

The role is funded as part of a $4.8M grant from Wellcome Leap. The overall aim of the current project is to identify novel methods for screening pregnant women to identify those at high risk of complications due to placental dysfunction and the project has been funded on the basis of a high chance of significant clinical impact. The statistical elements of the project are overseen by Dr Paul Kirk, who leads the MRC Biostatistics Unit Statistical and machine learning approaches for molecular precision medicine research programme. It is anticipated that the successful applicant would have affiliate status at the nearby MRC Biostatistics Unit and would also work closely with Dr Kirk.

The project will perform proteomic analysis of blood samples from the Pregnancy Outcome Prediction Study (POPS) cohort and will validate predictive models using samples from other cohorts. The existing data and biological samples from the POPS cohort have been generated from >£10M of external funding. Validation will include analysis of samples from the POPS2 cohort, funded by £3.1M from the Wellcome Trust.  Recent ¿omic analyses of the POPS cohort have resulted in high profile publications, including Nature (2019 and 2021) and Nature Medicine (2020).

The successful candidate will have a strong background in applied biostatistics and have advanced skills in the R statistical package.

They will have the opportunity to collaborate with a variety of researchers across the School of Clinical Medicine and other collaborating centres.

In the first instance, the post will be funded for a fixed term of 3 years. The post is full time.
