TUTOR IN ARCHITECTURE & URBANISM - DESIGN STUDIO

Joining the Manchester School of Architecture as a Tutor you will be responsible for teaching design studio on our MA Architecture & Urbanism programme.

The role entails leading a group of students through a series of urban design studio modules, ranging from strategic, regional frameworks through to masterplanning and detailed design of the public realm or buildings within the masterplan. The course staffing is multi-disciplinary, representing the diversity of perspectives and issues within urbanism. Tutors must reflect a distinct approach to urbanism - for example from the perspective of planning, landscape architecture, development-led, community-led, or theoretically-driven - informed by the tutor's expertise in either current research or practice. They guide a group of students through the design modules and contribute a lecture or workshop on their expertise to the wider student cohort. Administrative work will be required to manage aspects such as student attendance, feedback and assessment.

A qualification in urban design is essential, along with a background in urban design, planning, landscape architecture or architecture. The postholder must possess good leadership, organisation and communication skills, and be able to co-operate effectively as part of a large course team.

The postholder must be able to:

  • Contribute urban design expertise across development frameworks, masterplanning and the detailed design of open space/buildings
  • Drive a distinct approach to urbanism, leading her/his studio group through the stages of framework, masterplanning and detailed space design
  • Take responsibility for the administration of their studio group
  • Co-ordinate and accompany field trips
  • Work co-operatively with the wider staff team and the course leader.

Informal discussions can be held with Programme Leader Lucy Montague via L.Montague@mmu.ac.uk
