We are seeking a Research Assistant to investigate the environmental impacts and the uncertainty in these estimates of the UK’s most commonly consumed multi-ingredient foods, as reported by the National Dietary and Nutrition Survey (NDNS). The role is part of a larger project which aims to increase data quality, availability, and transparency of agricultural and food environmental impact estimates. It aims to close the knowledge gap regarding in the environmental impacts of the most commonly produced commodities and most commonly consumed foods in the UK, in total working to improve national resources to understand Scope 3 impacts and improve capacity for organisations to report their Scope 3 impacts.

The successful applicant will adapt existing and develop new research methodologies and materials. You will be expected to derive environmental impact estimates of some of the most commonly consumed foods in the UK. You will assess the uncertainty in the environmental impact estimates of UK foods. You will also contribute to wider project planning, include ideas for new and follow-on research projects. You will  manage own research and administrative activities, within guidelines provided by senior colleagues, including small scale project management techniques to coordinate tasks and meet deadlines. You will write a short report for the project funder, discussing the methods used and key findings from this project. 

You will hold, or be close to completion of, an undergraduate degree (or higher) in food systems, environmental science, or similar. You will possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within the established programmes. You hold previous experience of working with large food-related datasets, for instance HESTIA and foodDB. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write text that can be published, and represent the research group at meetings is essential. Experience of interacting with stakeholders, to understand their aims and objectives, and to incorporate them into research projects is a must.
