Medicines Manufacturing Facility General Manager

Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range £43,414 to £51,805, with potential progression once in post to £58,284

Role Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join the University of Birmingham’s Medicines Manufacturing Facility – MMF. The MMF is a GMP unit licensed by the MHRA and provides support to academic and industry partners developing new therapies, covering Advanced Therapeutic Medicinal Products (ATMPs), Faecal Microbiota transplants (FMT) and devices. The post-holder will manage the day-to-day activity across all three areas to ensure the operational delivery of their growing portfolio of work.

The MMF General Manager is a senior role, responsible for maintaining oversight of appropriate project set up and management, resource management, financial management and compliance of the MMF within the applicable standards and regulations, whilst continuing to expand the MMF’s services in line with the University’s strategies. This challenging and specialist role requires excellent operational management and leadership skills, coupled with an understanding of applicable regulations and codes of conduct. Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential in order to interact with college-level management, as well as academic, NHS and facility staff. The General Manager will carry forward the vision for the MMF working closely with the Quality and Production Managers, Service Delivery Manager, production technician team and commercial partners working in the facility.

This role requires confidentiality, discretion, and the use of initiative and at all times with the post holder ensuring that all University, College and Institute policies & procedures are adhered to within their specified area of responsibility.

Person Specification

• Relevant postgraduate qualification (higher degree or equivalent in the biomedical field)
• Experience of managing a regulated facility, with a strong preference for experience with managing in a GMP environment.
• Working knowledge and experience of relevant legislation related to Human Medicines, GMP and human tissue and data acquisition, storage and processing.
• Experience with financial management and administration in a publicly-funded organisation.
• Excellent communications skills, including the ability to interact confidently and professionally with a wide range of internal and external contacts at all levels.
• Ability to objectively assess service provision and propose and lead the implementation of improvements.
• Line management experience, including the ability to plan, motivate, supervise and manage a team in a challenging environment.
• Knowledge and experience of business risk assessment.
• Knowledge of the requirements of quality management systems and their practical implementation.
• Experience of inspections by regulatory bodies e.g., MHRA, HTA, and experience of audits by external and internal stakeholders.
