Research Associate: Sectarianism, Arabic Scholarship, and the Writing of History

About the role

The Faculty of History proposes to appoint four postdoctoral researchers for the fixed-term period of thirty-six months, starting from 01 February 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter, to work on the ERC Consolidator Grant ‘Moving Stories – Sectarianisms in the global Middle East'.

The project aims to explore a number of new approaches in the examination of this topic under the leadership of the Principal Investigator (PI), Professor John-Paul Ghobrial. Each team member works on a specific sub-project. The sub-project for Research Associate 1 is ‘Sectarianism, Arabic Scholarship, and the Writing of History’. Applicants are invited to propose a research outline to deliver the work package described in the Job Description for this post. 

Reporting to the project’s Principal Investigator (PI), the post-doctoral researchers will pursue an individual research programme, and work in collaboration with the project team and project associates, as appropriate. Postdoctoral researchers will be expected to liaise with the research team and the PI to refine and develop their research and ensure synergy of the entire project. They will be expected to produce articles or a monograph to be published by a top-quality journal during their tenure. In addition, they will be presenting their research results and representing the project at least one (inter)national conference or workshop. Post-doctoral researchers are also encouraged to engage in informal publishing and social media activities, for example by contributing blog posts on the project website. 

About you

Candidates should hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD/DPhil in a relevant field, and may come from any of the disciplines relevant to the topic. A significant research output (or promise thereof) is essential, as well as proven organisational skills and the ability to work congenially within a team.
