The role
The Design Group at The Open University has an international reputation as a pioneer in distance design education. As part of a strategic investment in Design, we seek three Lecturers to contribute to the creation of a new design qualification reflecting innovations in delivery and structure.
The successful candidates will help build a transformative distance design education programme. You’ll have experience in HE design teaching, and the knowledge and appreciation of developing learning resources for distance learning. This is an opportunity to develop the competences and capabilities for design thinking in theory and practice, and to create project-based learning through innovative relationships.
OU Design research explores the general principles and processes of design, with an emphasis on conceptualising design and innovation in terms of evolving technological, social and ecological intersections and transitions. You should be research active in one or more of the following areas: design processes, co-design, sustainable design and innovation, complexity and design and design education. You may have gained research experience in an academic position or in industry, consultancy or government. You will be supported to secure external research, enterprise and scholarship funding, publish in high-ranking peer reviewed journals and contribute to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) submissions.
As an academic member of staff in the School of Engineering & Innovation you will be based at Walton Hall, Milton Keynes. It is anticipated that a hybrid working pattern can be adopted. However, as this role is aligned to our Milton Keynes office it is expected that regular attendance in the office will be required when necessary in response to business needs.
The School provides a friendly and flexible working environment. Our commitment to equality and diversity has been recognised by the award of an Athena SWAN Silver Award.
If you would like to discuss the application or recruitment process before making an application, please contact Amy Siu at Resourcing Hub on 01908 655544 or amy.siu@open.ac.uk quoting the reference VRF 20678.
What you get in return
On top of a competitive salary and pension scheme, we offer a great range of benefits that support our employees including 33 days holiday per annum plus Bank Holidays and Christmas closure days, flexible working, fee waiver for all OU courses and qualifications, childcare vouchers, cycle-to-work scheme and secure bike parking, free on-site car parking, on-site nurseries, and many different sports and leisure clubs offering discounts and other benefits.
You will be encouraged and given the time, resources, and support to develop and submit an application for Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy through the OU’s internal scheme (Applaud).
