We are seeking to appoint a Historian of Africa whose research and teaching will expand and complement the current range of expertise in the School of History and Cultures. Candidates’ research may focus on any time period and any region of sub-Saharan Africa, but the appointee must be prepared to teach a broad curriculum in African history to undergraduate students who are taking degrees in African Studies, History, and Anthropology. This position is based in the Department of African Studies & Anthropology, where the appointee will benefit from interdisciplinary engagement, particularly through the Africa Talks series and the departmental writing group. Through the Birmingham Research Institute for History and Cultures, the candidate will also have opportunities to engage with colleagues in the History department, including those who work in the field of global history or on histories of other regions in the global south.
Undergraduate teaching in the first year is likely to include the following modules: The History of Africa and Its Diaspora, Atlantic Slavery, Gender and Colonialism in African History, and Anticolonial, Postcolonial, Decolonial. In subsequent years, the appointee may also develop new optional modules to reflect their own specialisms.
