About us

The UCL Sarah Parker Remond Centre for the Study of Racism & Racialisation (SPRC) is multidisciplinary and international in outlook. It was established at UCL in 2019 with Professor Paul Gilroy as its founding Director and is now directed by Professor Gargi Bhattacharyya and home to two full time Lecturers, affiliated academics and postgraduate students. The Centre works across the Faculties of Arts & Humanities and Social & Historical Sciences, delivering a multi-disciplinary MA programme, and hosting seminars and conferences as well as a number of public events and a lively public engagement programme. Its work encompasses the cultures, literatures, histories and social relations of the Black Atlantic, Europe, Africa and the Americas but is not confined to those regions. It aims to include the social and economic life of racialised peoples and institutions wherever they are found.

About the role

The SPRC invites applications for a 12-month fixed term position as Lecturer (Teaching) in Race, Ethnicity and Postcolonial Studies from 29 April 2026. The appointee will be expected to contribute to the delivery of the Centre’s teaching, to supervise research students in their areas of specialisation and to contribute to its mission of public engagement, knowledge transfer and capacity development.

About you

The successful candidate will have completed their PhD and must have experience of teaching in either an institutional or community setting. We welcome candidates with experience of assessment and dissertation supervision. They should be able to show that they understand the impact and significance of the work of the Sarah Parker Remond Centre for the wider community in London and beyond and be able to plan, organise and host events and materials for the Centre’s public programme.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the forms of expertise required to educate students at graduate level. Our students are highly accomplished and come with considerable expertise from previous education and professional experience. We are looking for a colleague who is energised by the high level of discussion and inquiry that this group of students brings. No specific disciplinary location is specified, however the successful candidate will be confident to teach inter-disciplinary materials and support students who come to the programme with a range of disciplinary trainings. We are particularly interested in candidates who can speak to the histories of racism and racial orders in Britain and/or other parts of Europe while also reflecting on emerging global or transnational racisms.

What we offer

Alongside the exciting opportunities this role presents, UCL also offers benefits including: 41 days' holiday (including 27 days' annual leave, 8 bank holidays and 6 closure days); defined benefit career average revalued earnings pension scheme (CARE); cycle to work scheme and season ticket loan; on-Site nursery; on-site gym; enhanced maternity, paternity and adoption pay; employee assistance programme: Staff Support Service; and discounted medical insurance.

Our commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

As London’s Global University, we know diversity fosters creativity and innovation, and we want our community to represent the diversity of the world’s talent. We are committed to equality of opportunity, to being fair and inclusive, and to being a place where we all belong. We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates who are likely to be underrepresented in UCL’s workforce. These include people from Black, Asian and ethnic minority backgrounds; disabled people; LGBTQI+ people.
