A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on AI for Additive Manufacturing. The post holder will be located in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.
Additive manufacturing, commonly also known as 3D printing, offers virtually limitless opportunities to make devices by controlling geometry, material composition, and processing conditions at every point in an object. The wider adoption of additive manufacturing is limited, though, by challenges including manufacturing process errors, poor design for additive manufacturing, lack of trained staff, and material quality. This project will involve using AI to address these challenges, for instance by using camera and other sensor data to correct and prevent manufacturing errors in additive processes. There will also be diverse opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations.
The key responsibilities and duties are research, planning and organising, and liaison and networking.
The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are experience in artificial intelligence, additive manufacturing, software/hardware development and research.
The successful candidate will have already been awarded or be close to obtaining a PhD (or equivalent experience) in a related topic. Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD or equivalent experience. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.
Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £27,929 - £32,348 Research Associate: £34,308 - £42,155
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 March 2025 in the first instance.
