The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) is looking for an administrative assistant to join its small and friendly Secretariat based at the beautiful and historic setting of the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge.

SCAR is the leading global organisation driving international research and collaboration in and around Antarctica, and delivers vital policy advice to decision makers within the Antarctic Treaty System and beyond. The SCAR Secretariat, a 4-person team headed by SCAR’s Executive Director, plays a crucial role in enabling SCAR to fulfil its mission. More information on SCAR is available at www.scar.org

As Administrative Assistant you will play a key role in supporting a vibrant international network of people involved in Antarctic research. Your work will be varied, with tasks ranging from general office support and responding to day-to-day queries, to planning international meetings and supporting international research groups.

The successful candidate will be highly organised, with excellent communications and IT skills and a passion to support vital work in an important area of environmental research. You must have experience of working in a team and of supporting and organising meetings. You must also be educated to degree level or have equivalent work experience.

There is scope to adapt the role to the skills and experience of the successful candidate. This position could be a great fit for a graduate looking for an entry level role into research administration and support but could also suit someone with more substantive administrative experience.

The role will provide the jobholder with the chance to develop their professional skills and experience in administration, communications and events management. There may be opportunities for international travel. Other benefits include generous holiday allowance, flexible/hybrid working and access to a cycle to work scheme.

This is a full time role. Job-share and part-time applications will be considered.

Further details can be found in the job description available at https://www.scar.org/general-scar-news/vacancy-administrative-assistant/

You must already have a valid visa to work in the UK to apply for this position.  To apply, please email the following documents to the SCAR Secretariat at info@scar.org by the closing date.

  1. A CV including the names and full contact details of at least two referees.
  2. A covering letter addressing each of the key criteria (see job description) explicitly.
  3. Proof of eligibility to work in the UK.

Short-listed candidates will be invited to participate in an interview and a practical test. It is anticipated that these will be held during the week beginning 6th March 2023.

If you have any questions on the role, please contact the SCAR secretariat at info@scar.org.
