Lead Developer

Role Summary

An exciting opportunity for a Lead Developer to join a product team at the University of Birmingham. You will be responsible for the design, implementation, and support of products which unify students’ digital experience, and will lead on technical strategy and decisions for a product team.

This is a lead technical role suiting someone with previous experience of building a solution that delivers an excellent customer experience, such as an app that unifies and seamlessly presents the outputs of various core systems. As part of this, you will have extensive knowledge of at least one area of the solution’s architecture, such as front-end web and mobile technologies, front-end design, back-end cloud engineering and API gateways. Based on students’ engagement patterns, you will work to the principle of ‘mobile first' and will have experience of cross-platform development. Experience of working in a product or agile team is also desirable. We are looking for a driven team player who is continually learning and comfortable providing technical vision, leadership and mentoring to other developers in the team.

Main Duties

• Lead enhancement of the product according to the product backlog through the design, development, and testing of the product.
• Develop tactical and strategically significant digital solutions utilising multiple technologies.
• Lead the use of source control systems to automate and enhance delivery processes.
• Lead the development team in agile development of the product, within the Scrum framework.
• Grow and share knowledge of specific technical areas as required for the product.
• Participate as a lead technical member of the product team.
• Actively participate in and promote Scrum events.
• Collaborate with product team colleagues to craft solutions together, with an ability to communicate technical needs to non-technical colleagues.

Person Specification

Requirements:

• Meaningful and relevant experience of developing solutions that deliver an excellent user experience, with significant expertise in at least one element of their architecture. This could include an in-depth knowledge of back-end technologies or of suitable front-end web and mobile technologies.
• Cloud experience (Azure preferred).
• Experience of mobile first development and cross-platform development
• Experience of leading on the design and implementation of technical solutions
• Experience of leading and coaching developers in an agile or product team
• Experience with Continuous Deployment/Continuous Integration (CI/CD) processes
• Experience using source control: Git.
• Knowledge in writing and applying automated tests
• Experience of working with end users
• Experience of user experience and user interface design advantageous
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Excellent analysis and troubleshooting skills
• A continuous improvement mentality

  Advantageous:

• Terraform.
• Github Actions experience.
