Supervision Team: Dr Rhodri Davies / Dr Michele Orini / Dr Carole Sudre

A MRes+PhD funded studentship is available in a partnership between the MRC Unit for Lifelong Health and Ageing, and the Centre for Medical Image Computing. Funding jointly from the MRC LHA, i4health CDT and the BHF accelerator award  will be at least the UCL minimum. Stipend details can be found here.

The successful candidate will join the UCL CDT in Intelligent, Integrated Imaging in Healthcare (i4health) cohort and benefit from the activities and events organised by the centre. They will also benefit from the activities of the BHF PhD Programme from the Institute of Cardiovascular Science

Project Background:

The MRC Unit for Lifelong Health and Ageing (LHA)  is an interdisciplinary unit and our research combines rich imaging, clinical, physiological, and biological data from across the life course to help us lead on discoveries into both normal and pathological ageing processes. The Centre for Medical Image Computing gathers expertise from mathematical and computational sciences and medical physics to develop technologies applied to healthcare imaging in partnership with clinicians.  Students will receive supervisory input from computer scientists, clinicians and data scientists and be integrated fully into the two units/centres. Broadly, the project will involve applying data science and machine learning techniques to physiological and imaging data to gain better insight into normal ageing and the disease process, with the overarching aim of improving prevention of cardio- and cerebro-vascular disease and cognitive decline and promoting healthy ageing.

Research aims:

The project will involve discovering features in cardiac and vascular imaging (e.g. ultrasound/echocardiography, magnetic resonance imaging) that predict cerebrovascular lesions.

  • This studentship is only open to Home Fee paying applicants.
  • Applicants are generally expected to have, or expected to obtain at least a First Class Honours or Upper Second Class Honours UK (or international equivalent) Bachelor’s degree, preferably in computer science, engineering, physics or related degree.
