Based in one of the UK's largest fashion hubs, in the heart of a great global city, Manchester Metropolitan University's Fashion Institute offers outstanding opportunities. The Institute has an established reputation within the education sector, we align ourselves with elite fashion schools worldwide. We are uniquely positioned as one the largest specialist fashion providers in UK HE, providing depth and breadth of expertise in our subject. We are a hub, working collaboratively across disciplines and borders. Our research and teaching cross science, the arts, business, health, sociology, sport and digital.
This is an exciting time to join Manchester Fashion Institute. We have recently made a number of outstanding appointments from Lecturer through to Professor, work has just been completed on a new student social/study space in the heart of the Institute, we have been investing significantly in our digital capability with new state of the art equipment and software, we are growing our collaborations with the Institute of Sport and have well established links with the Manchester School of Art and the Triple Accredited Manchester Metropolitan University Business School (through which staff with a business and management background are able to access a range of professional development opportunities). Our external engagement continues to grow through international collaborations and a newly formed External Advisory Board and we are accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing, the Chartered Management Institute and the Textile Institute. We are also members of the British Fashion Council, the International Foundation for Fashion Technology Institutes and the Graduate Fashion Foundation.
We are looking for a Lecturer in Fashion Cultures to join our dynamic and growing team. The successful candidate will contribute to the students' educational journey, bringing experience, skills and knowledge to inspire the next generation of fashion talent for an ever-changing industry.
We are seeking a specialist in critical and contextual studies with knowledge and understanding of fashion in its broadest sense, including: popular culture, fashion theory and fashion history, and with awareness of how urgent contemporary themes (e.g. age, race, gender, sexuality) shape and are themselves shaped by the contemporary fashion industry. You will be highly analytical and collaborative, able to demonstrate professional teaching experience related to fashion cultures with a strong grasp of the historical and contemporary narratives that shape the landscape of fashion, underpinned by sound theoretical knowledge and/or have high quality academic research or knowledge exchange in the area.
Every appointment will be expected to contribute to the design and delivery of high-quality teaching and assessment at undergraduate and postgraduate level. We have ambitious plans to grow our postgraduate provision, notably postgraduate research and those appointed could play a key part in supervision of PhD students.
The research community at Manchester Fashion Institute is vibrant and we are keen to capitalise on the recent REF success with fashion having made a significant contribution to the Art & Design submissions which was ranked second in the UK for research power and as a University, 90% of our research is considered world leading or internationally excellent.
