JOB OVERVIEW

Aberdeen International Study Centre (ISC) is based directly within the University of Aberdeen campus. You would be working in a culture of enhancing learning, teaching, and assessment through a developmental approach, which for you will mean autonomy, innovation, and development opportunities.

You will teach on the Humanities, Law and Social Science (HLSS) programme. This is designed and structured to provide international students with specific knowledge and skills along with academic study skills and employability skills to allow them to succeed when they progress into year 2 of their related degree at University of Aberdeen.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching and Learning

  • Plan appropriate, effective and inclusive learning programmes through schemes of work that take into account the diversity of the cohort
  • Plan teaching sessions which accommodate individualised learning using a variety of resources, including digital learning
  • Ensure a broad range of learning materials are available on the VLE for students to access and engage with, including self-directed tasks and activities that facilitate feedback and interaction
  • Apply the principles of learning and teaching to provide learning activities to meet curriculum requirements and the needs of all students
  • Select the relevant learning approaches and skill development to ensure students’ progress
  • Contribute to the provision of a stimulating learning environment whilst adhering to the Centres’ Health and Safety procedures

Assessment

  • Apply the theories and principles of assessment including initial, diagnostic, formative and summative assessment
  • Use a variety of methods to check to learn in lessons (formative assessment)
  • Ensure that interactive assessment activities are available to students through the VLE
  • Provide regular and timely feedback to students to enable them to improve their outcomes in order to achieve progression
  • Write summative assessments which appropriately measure the achievement of the learning outcomes of the programmes (including repeat assessments)
  • Prepare students for summative assessment through revision sessions and practice assessments
  • Engage in moderation of assessment materials and student work, including double marking, thorough and timely preparation of all relevant documentation for the external examiners, and participation in module assessment boards

Progress Support

  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate records of student attendance and progress
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to lapses in student attendance, punctuality, behaviour and application to their studies by individual conversations with students, referrals to personal tutors or referrals to professional services
  • Provide guidance and support with applications and interviews for students to gain access to MBChB Medicine
  • Support students with individual target setting and revise these throughout the year during progress checks
  • Support students with action planning to improve academic performance and achieve aspirational targets
  • Be available to offer support to students as required (e.g. workshops, booster and revision classes and one-to-one feedback sessions)
  • Support students to progress to the University by being proactive in liaising with University Schools and linking tutors
  • Contribute to student progress reports in a clear and constructive manner
  • Strive for and attain high levels of student achievement

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Humanities  / Social Science or related field (or equivalent) (Essential)
  • A relevant teaching qualification (Desirable)
  • Experience of teaching in the Higher or Further Education sectors or of Leaving Certificate (Hons)/A-level (Essential)
  • Experience in working with international students (Desirable)
  • Competence in using VLE platforms
