Technocamps is a pan-Wales schools and community outreach programme based at Swansea University but with hubs at Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff, Cardiff Metropolitan and Glyndŵr Universities and the Universities of South Wales and of Wales Trinity Saint David. Its aim is to encourage an increase in the number of pupils who opt to study computer science and its cognate STEM subjects.

The role of the Teaching Fellow will include: developing and delivering undergraduate modules, particularly in support of the Degree Apprenticeship programme whose students are full-time employees attending the University for lectures and labs on Wednesday evenings; and developing and delivering workshops and training sessions for both Primary and Secondary school pupils and teachers, both on campus and in schools.

The Teaching Fellow will report directly to the Director of Technocamps.

Duties include:

  1. Contributing to the teaching activities of the Computer Science Department, particularly within the context of the Degree Apprenticeship programme.
  2. Prepare teaching materials, communicate subject matter clearly, support students’ studies and encourage debate to develop rational thinking as appropriate to the module being taught.
  3. Participate in the review of modules and programmes and contribute to programme review.
  4. Take responsibility for setting and assessment of coursework and examinations, including marking and providing written and oral feedback.
  5. Carry out course evaluation including facilitating student feedback, reflecting on own teaching design and delivery and implementing ideas for improving own performance.
  6. Deal with student queries about the content and delivery of a module as well as provide advice and ideas to the where necessary.
  7. Supervise the project work of undergraduate students.
  8. Act as academic mentor to undergraduate students.

Candidates should have a first-class Honours degree in Computer Science with a recognised teaching qualification (or a commitment to achieving this). Essential also is evidence of effective delivery of teaching and assessment with excellent written and oral communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to communicate with academics, teachers, businesses and other organizations as well as Primary and Secondary school children. As such knowledge and experience of working with Primary and Secondary Schools and Further Education Colleges is also required.
