Do you have up-to-date knowledge in power electronics devices and systems, distributed generation and power systems? Do you have the practical work experience and skills to design, develop, and assess power electronic converters and systems for microgrids with renewable sourced generators? Are you resourceful and versatile in a collaborative, multi-partner project environment?

Innovative projects for railway decarbonisation have been granted to the Institute of Communication and Power Networks (ICaPNet) in the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. This opens an opportunity for a Research Fellow to join an exciting consortium that will speed the journey to railway decarbonisation by developing multi-energy hubs and for potentially, as many as 2,500 stations across the UK. As a part of the funded projects, these hubs will improve efficiency, support battery and hydrogen trains, and offer greater flexibility in both rail and grid operation. The project will investigate the feasibility of exchanging energy between vehicle batteries in station car parks, renewable generation units, the station and electricity grid, and the rail traction systems. It will examine hydrogen and battery trains and compare them with fully electrified trains, showing how the energy hubs can be designed to support different power supply modes and accelerate the railway decarbonisation.
