About us

The ICRC’s Regional Delegation to the UK and Ireland has offices in London and Belfast, undertaking operations and diplomacy. Protection activities in the UK and Ireland include engagement with practitioners and policymakers on the respect of IHL. It also includes a detention programme in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (with a focus on security detainees and restrictive regimes). ICRC coordinates closely with the British and Irish Red Cross Societies.

About the role

The delegation is offering a Protection internship at its office in London, for a period of up to one year.

Main duties and responsibilities

The Protection intern, reporting to the delegation’s Protection Coordinator:

Supports the Protection team and the wider delegation as directed, inc.

  • Monitoring media and relevant legislative/policy developments.
  • Briefing colleagues and/or drafts analysis on selected issues related to ICRC’s protection work.
  • Analysing ICRC data, compiling information from desktop research and presenting and/or drafting internal thematic briefing notes as required.
  • Supporting internal strategic thinking and stakeholder’s mapping.

Supports ICRC’s engagement with external stakeholders inc.

  • Contributing to external messaging and to the drafting of speaking points.
  • Preparing and updating dissemination presentations and materials for external interlocutors.
  • Attending external meetings, as well as seminars/events (policy or academic) relevant to the team’s priorities.
  • Preparing minutes of meetings of events and external meetings attended.
  • Fact-checking documents.

Team administration, inc.

  • Assisting with information management, and internal reporting processes.
  • Assisting the team as necessary with travel arrangements/logistics of prison visits, as well as arranging external meetings and potential team events.

Required qualifications & skills

Essential:

  • Fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Knowledge of the ICRC and its activities.
  • An undergraduate degree in political/social science, international relations, law or related.
  • Prior work experience, including voluntary and internship experience – particularly in international organizations, government, military, penitentiary or in the fields of human rights and international relations.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, ability to bring together complex information in an easy-to-read format.
  • Strong research, drafting and analytical skills.

Desired:

  • Relevant master’s degree.

Desired profile and skills

  • Strongly motivated by humanitarian work and ICRC’s protection work.
  • Understanding of how to handle sensitive information with confidentiality.
  • Flexibility and ability to efficiently handle multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team and across a multidisciplinary work environment.

Further Details

This is a full-time internship position (35 hours/week).  Additionally, we offer:

  • Competitive renumeration based on skills, qualifications, and experience. The salary range for this role starts at £27,456 per annum.
  • London Underground travel (zones 1 and 2)
  • 28 days annual leave.
