Job Summary

­­­­Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position to join the Metal Forming and Materials Modelling Group. The position is funded by an industrial partner and will involve working on a range of materials and forming techniques for automotive applications, with particular focus on aluminium welding.

The research activities of the group cover a wide range of areas from theoretical and computational solid mechanics to experimental materials research. There are two main research themes within the group:

  • Metal forming technologies – focussing on the development of advanced forming processes, which enable high strength and complex geometry engineering components to be formed.
  • Material modelling - tackles the fundamental challenges in the distribution and evolution of microstructure and defects as functions of loading, loading rate and temperature, which will enhance our understanding and facilitate the development of innovative forming techniques.

Over the past years, the group has developed several world-class-leading forming technologies and advanced material models, which have been directly implemented in the industrial environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • You will carry out research programmes in in metal forming, with particular focus on aluminium welding and extrusion.
  • You will work in conjunction with others in the development of novel manufacturing techniques.
  • You will be expected to submit publications to refereed journals and to attract external research funding.

Skills, knowledge and experience

  • ­You should hold a PhD (or equivalent, or near completion of PhD) in mechanical engineering, materials or a closely related discipline, and have excellent research experience as evidenced by publications.
  • Experience in aluminium welding and extrusion is essential.
  • Experience in machine learning would be advantageous.
  • You should be self-motivated and have good technical communication skills.

This is a fixed term position for 9 months in the first instance, starting from 1st March 2023.

This position is eligible for a hybrid working structure, with a minimum of 2 days per week on site.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £38,194 - £41,388 per annum.
