Applications are invited for a Research Associate / Senior Research Associate to work on petabyte-scale astronomy, the design of computing and software for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) observatory, and on advanced software techniques applied in general to astronomy as part of the Astrophysics Group at the Cavendish Laboratory (Department of Physics, University of Cambridge). 

The candidate will be joining a diverse and dynamic group consisting of astronomers, computer scientists and engineers working on SKA as well as the SKA precursors and prototypes including eMERLIN. The SKA project is adopting the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) for software development and the candidate will receive training to work as part of an agile software development team. Critical areas to be explored are use of scalable data execution frameworks, fast buffering, astronomy workflow development and integration and algorithmic performance. 

We are looking for a candidate with a PhD (or close to obtaining) in astronomy, computer science, engineering or related disciplines. A good working knowledge of python software development is essential and C++/C desirable. Significant experience working in the area of high performance computing or cluster computing, or working with data analysis frameworks, or parallel programming and analysis of astronomical data is expected for appointment at the Senior Research Associate level. Candidates with less experience will be considered for appointment at the Research Associate level.

Salary Ranges: Senior Research Associate - (Grade 9) £43,414 to £54,949. Research Associate (Grade 7) £34,308 to £42,155. Those initially under-appointed to a Research Assistant (Grade 5) £31,411.
