In our single biggest development since we were founded, UCL is expanding to east London. Located on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, UCL East will be dedicated to disruptive thinking and discovery across disciplines and beyond academic walls, to find solutions to the biggest challenges for future living. We are located in Newham, east London - one of the most socially diverse parts of the UK – and we want our staff recruitment to reflect this. Opening in 2022 and 2023, UCL East will unite academic activities across experiments, arts, society and technology, integrating research and education, theory and practice – with cross-disciplinary, innovation and public engagement. More than just a conventional campus, UCL East represents a future focused mindset. We will deliver new research, technology and innovation, and undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes for up to 4,000 students. This post sits in the Manufacturing Futures Lab (MFL ) in the Marshgate Building https://www.ucl.ac.uk/ucl-east/academic-vision/manufacturing-futures-lab.
The post will initially be based at UCL’s Bloomsbury campus. It will move to UCL East in late summer 2023. The Chemistry Department at UCL is one of the top-ranked departments in the UK, with 100% of its outputs ranked as being world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) in the recent REF2021. The Department is committed to supporting excellence in both research and teaching. The department offers undergraduate BSc and MSci programmes in Chemistry and currently teaches 750 undergraduates registered in Chemistry as well as students who select Chemistry on the Natural Sciences programme and first year Chemistry for life scientists. The Department also offers a number of Postgraduate Taught Masters courses with about 100 students per year, and in addition to this a new Master’s course in Chemical Sustainability will start in September 2023 at the MFL.
At the MFL we are setting up a hub for cross-cutting world-leading manufacturing research and education by taking a distinctive interdisciplinary approach. We are seeking a Lecturer in Chemical Sustainability, to develop and teach on our new postgraduate programme and contribute to our existing programmes where appropriate. The postholder will be expected to undertake a leading role in the development of the chemical sustainability teaching programme at the MFL, including postgraduate student project supervision and assessment. They will also carry out world-class research in sustainable chemistry to complement or expand the multidisciplinary activities of the MFL. This includes raising funds in order to support their research programme and publishing research outputs in the broad area of chemical sustainability.
You must have a PhD in the Chemical Sciences (including Chemical Biology or Synthetic Biology) and experience of undergraduate teaching in organic and biological chemistry, both in person or digitally. You should also have the background and expertise to enable you to make significant contributions to research in chemical sustainability. This includes the ability to raise research funding and produce original, rigorous research outputs. Importantly, you must have the ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment. Furthermore, experience of developing new programmes and modules and of supporting, assessing and supervising students is desirable. We are particularly keen to appoint someone with interdisciplinary research interests at the intersection between chemistry and the biological sciences with the expertise to teach courses in chemistry, molecular biology and synthetic biology.
