This role will lead on Northumbria’s response to the external research policy environment. As a credible senior leader the post holder will anticipate, influence and interpret policy developments and trends across a broad remit including research assessment (and future REF), ethics & integrity and researcher development. They will be the professional lead for all matters relating to research culture and will demonstrate a sound understanding of the impact of research culture on colleague experience and research outcomes.
The post holder will be expected to demonstrate a highly collaborative approach, working across the University and with external organisations. You will have a positive and inclusive leadership style, excellent communication skills and extensive knowledge of the UK research policy environment.
The role will line manage the Research Policy Team and as a member of the RIS Executive Team, will support the Director to lead and manage the whole service.
To be successful in the role you will have extensive knowledge of the UK Higher Education environment, including national policy for research, impact and innovation, and the associated funding landscape. Technical knowledge of all aspects of the Research Excellence Framework. Be able to lead on the development and implementation of NU wide plans and approaches to a wide range of research policy, governance and performance priorities, to deliver against the research and KE strategies, gaining buy-in and engagement from relevant professional and academic communities.
The ability to think strategically about your area of expertise in the context of the Research and Innovation Service objectives, supporting the University’s Corporate Strategy and within the changing external environment.
Have experience of managing a large team and demonstrate a sound understanding of research culture on colleague experience and research outcomes.
