Background
Fixed term, 0.5FTE eight month appointment, with a start date of anywhere between 01.04.2023 and 31.04.2023. The Research Fellow will have expertise in qualitative methods and will work on, and contribute to, an externally funded project investigating adult second language learning for religious purposes.
The post holder will work with the Principal Investigator, Dr Bene Bassetti, and will create and disseminate original research. This will include data collection (interviews), data analysis (transcription, coding, thematic analysis), literature reviews, and reporting (articles, reports for funders and the public).
Role Summary

- Develop and make substantial contributions to knowledge transfer.
To plan and carry out research within the specified research grant and project, using appropriate methodology and techniques. The responsibilities may include some but not all the responsibilities outlined below.
- Plan and execute high-quality research
- Collect research data through interviews, questionnaires, and literature reviews
- Analyse and interpret data
- Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
- Disseminate research findings though high-quality publication
- Develop and make substantial contributions to knowledge transfer
- Project manage the project’s research activities
- Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
- Promote equality and value diversity, fostering an inclusive working culture.
Person Specification
- A PhD (or close to completion) relevant to the research area (e.g., applied linguistics, psychology, education, religious studies).
- Research experience and scholarship relevant to the research area
- Methodological expertise and experience of conducting qualitative research (including both online and face-to-face interviews), fluency in relevant techniques and methods (including interview transcription, coding, thematic analysis, using suitable software) and ability to contribute to developing new ones
- Strong written communication skills, including ability to write and publish peer-reviewed research papers from primary qualitative research, and dissemination of written reports (including for the sponsor and for communities)
- Excellent project management skills, with the ability to plan, undertake and project manage research to deliver high quality results
- Strong interpersonal skills: ability to work as part of a team and the proven ability to achieve positive outcomes
- Willingness to travel for data collection within England if required.
- Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
