Institute and Departmental Introduction
The Institute of the Arts Barcelona (IAB) offers seven programmes of study and learning pathways that make up our educational portfolio. Comprised of three departments as well as key finance, operations and engagement teams, the Institute works to excel in the areas of creativity, learning, teaching and research. The Institute is responsible for delivering programmes that are unique, relevant, match industry demand, have dynamic teaching and learning environments, and contemporary learning styles and strategies.
The IAB aims to provide a stimulating, industry-integrated environment that enables a diversity of learners to communicate, collaborate and innovate within a range of creative and cultural contexts. Our academic faculty work in partnership with support staff in immersive, flexible and work-based environments. The IAB encompasses over 70 staff and 350 learners in Acting, Dance, Commercial Dance and Musical Theatre.
The Musical Theatre Department has been a part of the IAB for close to a decade and is one of the EU’s foremost providers of tertiary, degree-based education in musical theatre. The Musical Theatre Department is dedicated to excellence in musical theatre training and aims to produce fully integrated performers capable of employment throughout the global performing arts industry. The departments focus and market is global and requires strong advocacy at this level.
The departments offerings currently include a Foundation Course (Musical Theatre), BA(Hons) Musical Theatre and Masters in Creative Practice (Musical Theatre). In total, the Musical Theatre Department at IAB represents substantial provision, currently amounting to nearly 130 full time students. Led by an internationally recognized faculty, the departments strong and functional community and industry links ensure vocational and professional programmes that produce graduates with effective and practical creative skills.
Prime function/purpose of the job
The incumbent will specialise in musical theatre and have a portfolio of high-level skills in musical theatre accompaniment and theory teaching. Additional experience as a vocal coach is also desirable. Experience teaching at a tertiary level is required, together with recognised standing in the profession and the capacity to provide relevant industry experience to support student and graduate achievement. The incumbent’s teaching practice will demonstrate a clear commitment to continually developing innovative practices that respond to the integration of the three skill areas of musical theatre performance across diverse styles and the need to prepare students for diverse professional careers.
The position requires the successful preparation and delivery of studio-based practical training, collaboration with fellow academic staff and mentorship of casual (adjunct) teaching staff in the development and delivery of curriculum.
