Lecturer in Sociology (Criminology)

University of Aberdeen - Social Sciences

Location: Aberdeen
Salary: £44,314 to £52,841
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 20th March 2023
Closes: 10th April 2023
Job Ref: SOC078A

The Department of Sociology seeks to appoint a full-time Lecturer on a substantive basis in the area of Criminology. A ‘Lecturer’ post in the Scottish University system is comparable to a tenure track Assistant Professor post in the North American system. Successful applicants will develop their own impact-oriented independent and potentially collaborative research agendas, contribute to both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes, and participate in the administration of the department and the School of Social Science where necessary.

The Department of Sociology is currently ranked 10th in the UK by the Guardian University Guide and 16th by the Complete University Guide. The University of Aberdeen – one of the UK’s six ancient universities – is consistently ranked in the top 200 globally and is currently ranked in the top 160 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (2022). Both the Department and the University provide excellent support for scholarship and research activity.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Sociology or a closely related discipline with expertise in criminological areas of inquiry and research. They will have experience of teaching in higher education and have the capacity to contribute to courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Ability to teach quantitative methods would also be desirable. It is expected that the candidate will exhibit the capacity for major contributions to scholarship, to the development of sociological research and teaching on both Sociology and Criminology courses and exhibit a strong potential to acquire future grant income.

They should be self-motivated, flexible and have an ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students, inspiring them to learn.  There should be clear demonstration of an academic career trajectory and a willingness to make a full contribution to the School’s activities.

The post is offered on a substantive basis, commencing as soon as August 2023.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 7 scale (£44,314 - £52,841 per annum), with placement according to qualifications and experience.

Informal enquiries should be made to Dr Andrew McKinnon, Head of Sociology, e-mail: andrew.mckinnon@abdn.ac.uk

Should you require a visa to undertake employment in the UK you will be required to fulfil the minimum points criteria to be granted a Certificate of Sponsorship under the requirements of the Skilled Worker visa.  At the time an offer of appointment is made, you will be asked to demonstrate that you fulfil the criteria in respect of qualification and competency in English. For research and academic posts, we will consider eligibility under the Global Talent visa. Please do not hesitate to contact Laura Sleigh, HR Adviser (e-mail: laura.sleigh1@abdn.ac.uk) for further information.
