Department

The Department of Archaeology at the University of York is ranked 18th in the world in the QS rankings. We are based in both the King’s Manor in the heart of the historic city of York and at Heslington West campus. Role

The Department of Archaeology at the University of York is seeking a postdoctoral research associate (aDNA) to work on the ERC funded project “COMMIOS: Communities and Connectivities: Iron Age Britons and their Continental Neighbours” led by Professor Ian Armit. The project is a collaboration with the Reich Laboratory at Harvard Medical School, SUERC (University of Glasgow) and BGS (Keyworth).

The postholder will conduct individual and collaborative research in ancient DNA analysis, the writing up of research results and their dissemination through scientific publications, seminar and conference presentations. The postholder will liaise closely with colleagues at Harvard over all aspects of ancient DNA analysis.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed

  • First degree in archaeology, genetics or a cognate discipline
  • PhD in ancient DNA analysis, genetics, biochemistry and/or a relevant field of archaeological science or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge in in the analysis of ancient human DNA sufficient to engage in high quality research
  • Knowledge of a range of appropriate research techniques and methodologies
  • Research expertise in an area that will complement and enhance the department's research strategy and goals
  • Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide ranging audience, both orally and in writing, using a range of media
  • Ability to write up research work for publication in high profile journals and engage in conferences, seminars and public dissemination
  • Experience in bioinformatics is highly desirable
