Here’s more about the role and what we’re looking for:

We are seeking an enthusiastic and agile Research Assistant with a broad skillset to innovate at the cutting-edge of microwave antennas, materials and systems in the defence sector. 

With an initial focus on reconfigurable systems, there will be opportunity to move between different but related microwave engineering projects. 

You remit will involve design, simulation, construction and measurement of microwave devices/systems and is linked to the new Electromagnetic Environment (EME) Hub based at Loughborough University. 

The EME Hub innovates world-class generation after next capability on the wireless delivery of desired effects and effect assessment in the defence and security sector. It develops, expands and consolidates robust and diverse information networks and pipelines between academia, industry and government agencies.  Furthermore, the Hub supports and enhances skills of the UK workforce in the defence and security sector through science and technology outreach and training.

The Hub is sponsored by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and its consortium includes Queen’s University Belfast, Queen Mary University of London, University of Leeds, and University of Glasgow.  The consortium will total four PDRAs and at least nine PhDs.  A community of Defence Primes and SMEs are affiliated to the Hub.  This exciting role provides opportunity to work collaboratively within a vibrant community of researchers and external stakeholders to develop fundamental new research and methods.

This role is only open to UK nationals because of the defence and security nature of the work.

Key Requirements:

  • Experience of working within a university engineering or physics department, facility, or equivalent research environment.
  • Significant postgraduate research experience in microwave engineering.
  • Postgraduate research experience of using microwave test equipment.
  • Experience of using full-field electromagnetic simulation/design software, such as CST Microwave Studio, HFSS, Comsol etc.
  • Authoring original work for academic journal papers and conference presentations
  • Multitasking across different independent projects
  • Have a PhD degree (near completion) Engineering with a topic related to microwave engineering
