We are looking for a highly motivated individual with experience of Geoarchaeology, Quaternary Science, Environmental Archaeology or Physical Geography to join the Quest team. The role will include undertaking, supervising and monitoring borehole survey and ground investigation works, recording and interpreting deposits, extracting stratigraphic data from secondary sources, deposit modelling and contributing to a variety of report types. The role holder will also undertake a range of geoarchaeological-focussed laboratory techniques and be responsible for the running and maintenance of a suite of laboratories.

Quest (Quaternary Scientific) is a well-established enterprise within the School of Archaeology, Geography and Environmental Science (SAGES) at the University of Reading. We provide an expert Archaeological Science service to archaeological unitsenvironmental consultancies, government organisations, charities and university-led research projects (for more information visit www.reading.ac.uk/quest)

As a Geoarchaeologist, you will:

  • Undertake geoarchaeological fieldwork in rural and urban locations (including busy construction/ demolition sites)
  • Undertake laboratory-based geoarchaeological techniques including (but not limited to): sediment descriptions, organic-matter determinations, peat humification, particle size analysis.
  • Support geophysical work through fieldwork and data processing
  • Undertake geoarchaeological deposit modelling, tabulation of data and preparation of basic reports
  • Deliver training to students, and on occasions to staff and visitors on a variety of geoarchaeological techniques

You will have:

  • Excellent field & laboratory work skills – specifically in geoarchaeology or a related subject
  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to contribute to team meetings and tabulate results
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to deal with students, other team members and senior staff
