As Senior Data Scientist, you will support the Data Science team to ensure the quality and effectiveness of data usage through:

  • Working in collaboration with central ICT for the use of the Unified Data Platform to ingest and extract relevant datasets
  • Automating and improving the data workflows used for the creation of reports, dashboards and data models
  • Implementing data science and machine learning models to make predictions from the data.
  • Working closely with other teams to improve data management, modelling and best practices.

You will develop data insights and visualisations for educational, evaluation and research purposes. Working closely with stakeholders, you will define innovative approaches to learning analytics throughout all aspects of the student lifecycle.

The post supports the larger objectives of the IDEA Lab and the college-wide initiatives to deliver an improved student experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • manage the delivery of ‘big data’ technologies to support analytics education, research and enterprise purposes, working under general direction with a clear framework of accountability and exercising substantial personal responsibility and autonomy, planning own work to meet given objectives and processes. 
  • help scope data requirements to support the development of software systems, data integration and data retrieval activities through to the iteration, review and maintenance of data requirements and data models.
  • manage the integration of new/existing relevant data from sources across the College, using techniques such as data flow mapping and business process modelling to communicate business requirements.
  • ownership of data modelling projects (including developing relevant KPIs, timescales, reporting, etc.)
  • responsibility for understanding business users’ requirements and user needs
  • support the integration of datasets across different verticals across thematic areas in the Business School including Teaching and Learning, Marketing, Admissions, Careers, Lifelong Learning, etc.
  • provide knowledge and know-how on the creation of data science and machine learning models based on requirements from stakeholders and users around the Business School and College.

Essential Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent, preferably a technical qualification or comparable
  • Experience working with Agile or iterative project techniques and methodologies
  • Experience supporting junior members of the team
  • Knowledge of a broad range of current and emerging ICT technologies and business processes, delivery models, principles and practice
  • Relevant and current hands-on experience analysing and managing data in a medium or large organisation covering infrastructure, data warehousing, software engineering, business intelligence and programming for data science
  • Successful track record in the interpretation and classification of data
  • Experience of identifying and undertaking data analysis within a complex technological environment, extracting meaningful insights from the data.
  • Knowledge of data science model creation and deployment
