Role Summary

Built on robust technical refrigeration knowledge, we are looking to recruit into the Centre for Sustainable Cooling a senior researcher (Grade 8) with robust technical refrigeration knowledge to lead the development of whole system of system step-change approaches to sustainable and resilient cold-chain for food and pharma products within the wider transition to renewables in both low- and middle-income countries, and high-income countries.  This necessarily goes beyond simple energy efficiency of existing technologies but needs also to consider, inter alia, energy system and energy storage; the opportunity offered by modal shifts (e.g., drones) or product reformulations; the underlying business models as well as behavioural changes, policies and industry operational interventions.

Main Duties

  • Engage cross-discipline within UoB and with other universities, as well as with industry and governments, to define needs, opportunities, solutions and barriers.
  • Develop and conduct academic and industrial research, including securing grants, in the area of sustainable and resilient refrigeration and cold-chain for food and pharma products.
  • Conduct associated academic activities such as conferences, writing and managing publications in high quality scientific journals and in magazines accessed by industry.
  • Feed into the development of new curricula including teaching and learning materials, based on the new knowledge created in the area of sustainable and resilient refrigeration and cold-chain for food and pharma products.
  • Manage and undertake out-reach knowledge transfer activities to cold-chain actors across the whole cold-chain spectrum.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • At least a degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Have both extensive (5 years+) theoretical and practical knowledge of refrigeration systems, their design, commissioning, operation and maintenance.  Preference will be given to candidates who
    • can demonstrate experience across a range of systems (i.e., industrial, commercial, transport and domestic).
    • have, in particular, experience with design, operation and maintenance of off-grid refrigeration systems.

Desirable:

  • Experience in design, application, and integration of off-grid refrigeration systems.
  • Experience of the pharmaceutical cold-chain.

Skills:

  • Excellent networking, engagement with stakeholders and communication skills (oral, written and presentation).
  • Excellent project and time management skills.
  • A ‘can do’ attitude with ability to take on new tasks and drive them to a successful conclusion.
  • Ability and desire to travel both within the UK and internationally.
  • Proven commitment to deliver his/her duties accurately against deadlines.
